Tan Huay Peng (1923-1990)

Tan Huay Peng, better known as Peng, was well known for his political cartoons in The Straits Times (ST) in the '50s, late '70s and early '80s.

He had no formal training in graphics but worked in ST's art department between 1955 to 1961, eventually becoming its chief artist. He was known to have a "unique style of drawing with an Asian slant".

Peng then left to join the Economic Development Board, where he worked in what became the Design Centre, providing graphic design services for government agencies and local manufacturers.

In the 1980s, he published a series of cartoon books based on his work for the newspapers including Fun with Chinese Characters (1980) and Fun With Words (1983).

He died of a heart attack on 12 November 1990 at the age of 67.
